What is Child ObesityChild obesity affects 30% of the children in the United States, nearly three times what it was fifty-two years ago. Obese children are more likely to have health problems that were once strictly adult concerns. These include type 2 diabetes, asthma, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD; can cause liver damage and scarring), cancer, hypertension, and high cholesterol, as well as other health concerns. Kids who are obese are more likely to be obese as adults. Childhood obesity is also linked to both higher and earlier death rates in adults.
Kids are considered obese when their BMI (body mass index) is 30 or above. BMI was only used to measure obesity in adults but has now become a common way to measure it in children; before there was a simple measurement use called weight-for-age. BMI measures height and weight (in kilograms and square meters). Weight-for-age was based around percentiles; it measured a percentage of the child population and what they are expected to weigh for their height and age. A child was obese under the weight-for-age measurement if they were at or above the 95th percentile. In other words, they would have to weigh more than at least 95% of the children.
Major reasons kids are obese are: junk foods marketed targeting kids, leading a sedentary lifestyle, diet, and socioeconomic status. Those from poorer families are at a greater risk to be obese in adolescence. Those lower income families don’t have the money available for them to go out for sports. Also responsible are parents who buy foods that are high in sugar and fat because those foods are a lot cheaper and more convenient. Picky eaters do not help matters; they can refuse to eat fruits and vegetables, making it impossible for them to do anything but gain weight because the only foods they will eat are the ones contributing to their obesity. Also, there is less research being done by parents to see what their kids should be eating and no monitoring to see what they do eat. Daily portion size and caloric intake, has dramatically increased.
Another contributing factor toward obesity is lack of physical activity. A lot of kids spend most of their day sitting and being sedentary. They are either riding the bus, sitting on the couch playing video games or watching television, or getting a ride to and from school. The only opportunity they have for physical activity is either physical education or recess. Both kids and teens need to engage in 60 minutes of moderate to intense exercise of some kind each day. However, a lot of schools these days do not make physical education classes a daily requirement; in this country, 8% of elementary schools and only 7% of middle schools do.
Obese children often times develop psychological effects when they are obese. These include low self esteem, a negative image about their bodies, sleep apnea, and depression. Other kids can contribute to the problem, making them feel worse about themselves and their situation, through intimidation and bullying. Feeling lonely, helpless, and worthless can possibly make their obesity problem worse.
Parents of potentially obese kids need to monitor their diets and activities to make sure their kids are developing a healthy lifestyle. The parents need to teach their children healthy habits and enforce what they teach. Kids need to take the initiative for themselves, to be active and eat the right foods. It’s good they get in the habit of eating healthy and exercising early because once they start developing bad habits, it’s difficult to break the cycle. When they are healthy as a kid, they’ll be healthier as adults.

It is a sad fact that more and more of the nation’s children are becoming obese. Not just overweight, but actually obese. Obesity seriously impacts on a child’s life, socially and physically. It can make them a target for bullying, the butt of cruel jokes, and can limit their ability to join in with activities at school and at home. Over the past three decades, the number of children in the USA considered to be obese has actually doubled, and more than a third of American children and adolescents are now technically rated as obese. Clearly, solutions to childhood obesity need to be sought.

So what are the answers? And who is at fault? It’s easy to blame it all on the parents, but of course that isn’t always the entire problem. Advertisement of high calorie foods, the prevalence of fast food restaurants, the poor quality of school meals, and the wide availability of calorific snacks all have a role to play in the increasing waistlines of young people today.

So, where to begin in helping children maintain a healthy weight?

The buck really has to stop with the parents. If parents are overweight, there is a good chance that their children will follow in their footsteps, so starting with helping Moms and Dads get to their ideal weight is the way to go. Parents need to present a healthy and strong role model to their kids, showing them the right foods to eat and helping them to get enough exercise. It’s easy to see how children can pile on the pounds when parents lie on the sofa eating potato chips rather than snacking on fresh fruit and playing games in the fresh air.

Starting gently is a good way to go. Eating dinners together as a family, and choosing healthy options rather than fatty fast foods is a good place to begin. Instead of driving to McDonald’s or Burger King for yet another drive through meal, encourage the kids to help in preparing a tasty fresh salad, hearty soups and stews packed with vegetables, and delicious fruit smoothies. Involving children with the preparation and cooking process helps them to engage with, and get a better understanding of healthy eating and develop the skills that they need to lead a healthy life.

Enjoying activities and days out as a family is another great way to increase the whole family’s energy levels. Participating in sports together, such as swimming, hiking or cycling, is both fun and excellent exercise.

Instead of relying on your kids choosing healthy options for school meals, pack a lunch full of filling but low calorie foods. Plenty of fruit, salads, lean meats and low fat milk are all good choices to help your child lose weight. Make sure that you don’t give them spare money to spend on chips, candy and chocolate on the way home.

When visiting the supermarket, avoid temptation. Give a wide berth to the desserts, baked goods, candies, cookies and salty snacks. Instead, focus on the vegetable section, fresh meats and whole grains. When offering choice to your kids, make it between two healthy options so they feel that they have some control, but will still be making a good selection.

Encouraging your child to take part in out of school sporting activities is a good way to help them lose weight and shape up too. Whatever your child expresses an interest in, be it soccer, football, athletics or gymnastics, encourage them to join a club and participate. Opening their eyes to fun opportunities is the best way to foster their interest and lead them down a path towards lifelong health.

How to Prevent Childhood ObesityThere is a big problem in this country. Childhood obesity is at all time highs. It seems children are gaining weight at such a rate that it puts them at risk for many diseases including diabetes. There are some things parents and caregivers can do to help prevent childhood obesity.
Encourage Healthy Eating
Children are hungry and are going to need to eat. Be sure to provide plenty of healthy options for this. Keep fresh fruits, vegetables, and even whole grain breads and crackers at home. Instead of giving them sugary drinks give them water. Water can be flavored with fruits such as lemons. Treats are okay now and then. Stick to special occasions for the cakes and cookies.
Make Food Healthy
There are some small changes that can make some of their favorite foods healthier. Pizza can be made with a whole wheat crust and reduced fat cheeses. Mash cauliflower can be stuck into macaroni and cheese. There are also a number of low and reduced fat varieties for many things that children like to eat.
Stay Active
Technology is beneficial but it seems that children are playing video games and on the computer more often than they are playing. Limit the amount of time the child is able to play on their devices. Help them get in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. It can be something as simple as going for a walk with them. Encourage them to play outside with other children that live nearby. If a child shows an interest in sports help them sign up for the local team.
Eat Together
Many families eat in front of the tv. This is a bad habit that can lead to overeating. When a person it watching tv they are not paying attention to the feeling of fullness and can easily overeat. When having dinner or even a snack do not eat it in front of the television.
Avoid Labeling Food
When a parent labels foods as good or bad it can make the bad foods seem even more desirable. Talk to the child about developing a healthy diet and why some foods are better for the body. Having an occasional treat will not hurt the body but eating too much of it every day is not good.
Involve the Child
Take the child along when shopping for food and cooking meals. The child will get to understand what foods they like, how to make meals more nutritious and they will even begin to try new and different types of foods. The child will learn about how different foods are good for their health. They will also learn some basic food safety skills as well.
Childhood obesity is a real problem. By following these simples tips parents can help their children develop healthy eating habits at an early age. They will learn what foods the body needs and how to make healthy meals. They will also learn about moderation and how to eat only when they are hungry.

child obesity First of all, before the real problem of child obesity is talked about, let’s discuss what the definition is first in general. What is child obesity? It is a form of very serious medical condition that does affect primarily children and adolescents. This medical condition does occur when a child is way above the normal weight level that it should be. This is what is known as being obese. When a child is obese, there is a presence of far too much body fat, and having too much body fat is what does encourage the presence of child obesity. Child obesity is the result of too much body fat for that child’s particular age and height.

Why child obesity is so very troubling is very clear and obvious. It is because, the childhood obesity is the very thing, which does start the boy or girl out on a road, which is paved with health problems that were once something that adults just faced. Some of these adult health problems that kids are getting are no other than diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol issues. Child obesity can also lead to other detrimental things and these include poor self esteem and depression as well. Child obesity is indeed a very serious problem.

Child obesity in America is a very serious problem indeed. There are plenty of very real statistics out there, which can illustrate, as well as prove this point. This is an issue that is at epidemic proportions. However, despite this reality, it is still something that can be turned around before it gets further out of control and more lives of young children are being plagued by awful health problems. What is this solution? The one solution that comes to mind is this. Parents must take control of the situation and turn it around for the better. This can be done by adapting one of the very best of all strategies to help lessen the impact of child obesity in America. They need to the overall diet and exercise habits for that of the whole family. Children and teenagers need to stop eating all of the wrong foods, first of all, and these wrong foods are any foods that are not giving them what they need nutrition wise. These wrong foods are all the bad things for them. Secondly, parents do need to ensure that their kids are getting the right kind of exercise, and the right kind of exercise is exercise that is keeping them fit and active. Good health is something that must be properly maintained by both parent and child. A child cannot do it on his or her own initiative. Parents have to become part of their child’s initiative to keep and maintain good health. This partnership of parent and child working together is the only solution to fighting child obesity in America. They have to do it together as a team effort.

With double the number of young people considered to be obese today than 30 years ago, it is easy to see that childhood obesity is fast becoming a major epidemic across the country. More and more children have expanding waistlines, are targets for bullying, and find themselves suffering from related health conditions, even including type 2 diabetes which was previously only found in adults. With ever-increasing numbers of kids getting bigger and bigger, experts are now being forced to look into the causes of childhood obesity with the hope of being able to control the situation.

Evidence has shown that there is no one single cause of childhood obesity. Instead, there are multiple complex factors, both behavioral and social, that impact on a child’s propensity to gain weight. So what are the causes of childhood obesity?

Behavior Factors
If we simplify matters, obesity is caused by consuming too many calories and doing too little exercise. Basically, if we eat more calories than we need on a daily basis, we are going to get bigger and bigger. Obese children are making unhealthy food choices and living too sedentary a lifestyle. Of course, often children don’t make these sorts of decisions on their own but rely on their families and parents to make food choices for them. If parents traditionally live an unhealthy lifestyle, children will continue to live according to that pattern, meaning that obesity is passed down the generations. It is important for parents to help teach children which foods are good for them and which should be avoided, and to encourage them to take regular exercise. If children survive on a diet of fast food, candy, and sugary snacks while lying on the sofa instead of running around and playing sports, it is fairly obvious that they are going to put on weight.

Billboards, the Internet and TV advertisements are constantly promoting unhealthy foods. From candy bars to potato chips, our kids are bombarded on a daily basis with images of delicious but calorific snacks. When was the last time you saw an advert for fruit and vegetables? No wonder children tend to gravitate to the snack products aisles when they go to the supermarket.

Unfortunately, many families are living on limited incomes, and the types of food available at low cost in supermarkets today tend to be unhealthy, processed options. Fresh meat, whole grains, fruit and vegetables are all priced highly, so guess which products hard pressed families choose?

Nowhere To Play
In many communities, there is an appalling lack of provision for children to get outside and play safely. Transportation to sports fields, parks and recreation facilities may be limited, and many areas even lack sidewalks meaning that there is no safe way for children to even walk to school. When kids are driven everywhere and have no outlet to get out and exercise, it’s little wonder that they are getting bigger.

Portion Sizes
Without realizing it, portion sizes have increased over the last few years. A candy bar is bigger today than it was a decade ago. Fast food outlets give bigger portions, and restaurants load our plates with food. If food is presented in large quantities to our kids, then they are going to eat what they are served. After all, don’t we all nag our kids to finish what’s on their plate?

Tackling these causes of obesity is becoming a priority today as children who are obese have a much poorer quality of life than their thinner counterparts. Not only do they face bullying at school and difficulties in social situations, but they are being set up for a lifetime of ill health. Also, children who are obese today are the obese adults of tomorrow, breeding another generation of overweight kids. It’s time to tackle the causes of obesity before the situation spirals completely out of control.
